about

Unlike New Material Night Volume 1, which was recorded over one night in San Francisco, Volume 2 is a compilation of some of my favorite jokes, rants and improvised moments from Seattle's Eclectic Theater, where I did the majority of my joke development over the past decade. Just like the previous volume, these are all iphone recordings. (As a result, the audio quality varies greatly and is inconsistent...which is why I've made it just $5 to purchase. Using headphones is highly recommended!)

I started doing stand-up comedy in Seattle in 2005. Even though I moved back to NYC in 2008, I still have a great affinity for Seattle and regularly return there to develop new material. I began doing my New Material Nights at the 40-seat Eclectic Theater (originally the Odd Duck Theater) in 2012. For me, it was a productive, sometimes magical, space that closed in 2018 because, as the album discusses, gentrification was/ is rampant in Seattle.

On this record, you will hear me struggle my way through jokes and stories that I sometimes had no punchline for. As you'll see, I find some of the punchlines live on stage... and sometimes I didn't. I jokingly yell at the audience a lot, sometimes even walking off stage and into the seats to do so. You'll also hear jokes in their earliest stages that eventually end up on an album or special. I don't always have the confidence I need to sell the joke and sometimes I go in a direction that proves to be not as fertile as anticipated. It's all part of the process of creating comedy and is documented here.

RIP Eclectic Theater...and thank you.

All jokes recorded at the now defunct Eclectic Theater (formerly Odd Duck Theater) from 2012-2018. Many thanks to Rik Deskin for his support and for keeping this wonderful venue alive for as long as he did.
